懐かしの村上春樹氏

As I wrote in this blog on June 27th, er..., in Japanese, the interviews with Haruki Murakami appeared in the previous and the present issues of the Mainichi Weekly.
When I was a university student, I loved his works so much and would often read his works, yes, almost all of his works.
Especially, his Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is one of my most favorite books.
I've, however, never read any of his works for some reason ever since graduating from the university.
So his works have become what reminds me of my school days ― my old friends, the shops and the streets in Kyoto I used to drop into and cycle across and along, and my old loved one. (^^;
It means that they have become something important for me and, at the same time, what makes me reluctant to touch it again in a sense.
So I've also not read any of his recent works, Kafka on the Shore, for instance, despite having heard that it's highly appreciated all over the world.

Reading the interviews with him this time, I feel an irresistible desire to read Kafka on the Shore or Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World in English if I can.
I wonder and can hardly wait to see how his characteristic world and writing style have been translated into English. (^^)

う～ん・・・。
ホント、村上春樹氏の作品って私にとって大学生時代そのものです。
今出川や堀川、千本通りを自転車で日々駈け抜けていたことや、勉強よりもバイトや飲み会 (^^;、恋愛に耽って、その時その時を楽しむのが精一杯で、将来の事なんて何一つ考えられなかった頃・・・
あぁ、懐かしすぎる・・・。(T-T)
ある意味、懐かしすぎて、ちょっと辛いことまで思い出させてくれる作家さんだったりもするので、卒業してから一度も手に取ることはなかったんですが、インタビュー記事のせいで、久しぶりに読みたくなっちゃった。
どの作品がどんな題名だったのか、それがどんな英語のタイトルに訳されているのかもわからない状態ですが、とりあえずまだ一度も読んでなくて、海外でも高く評価されている（らしい）Kafka on the Shore は読んでみようかな。
彼のあの独特の世界がどんな風に翻訳されたのか、ドキドキものです。
そしてあの気だるい、何とも言えない読後感。
彼の作品が日本だけでなく世界中で高く評価されているのって、嬉しいような、不思議なような・・・。
英語で読んでみたら、その理由も少しはわかるかしらん？

どんな記事なのかは確かめたくもありませんし、できればウィークリー毎日の定期購読も打ち切ってしまいたいくらい情けないニュースだったんですが、如何せん、定期購読は数カ月単位で先払い・・・
新聞社ってもっと自分に厳しくあるべきだと思う今日この頃です。

読書記録・洋書（2008）

2008年度版：読んだ洋書の感想と、全く主観的なお薦め度。
シリーズものはラストだけ読むというわけにもいかないので、全部まとめて同じお薦め度にしようかとも思いましたが、それだとあまりにも面白くないので、強引にお薦め度に差をつけています。（ほとんど無意味だと思いますが）
下から上に読んだ順になっています。
英文は本文からの抜粋です。

The Golden Compass (US) 映画化されたのでご存知の方も多いと思いますが、日本版『ライラの冒険シリーズ』の第１巻『黄金の羅針盤』がこれにあたります。 私達の世界と酷似したイギリスや北極を舞台にしていますが、この世界の人間は「daemon」と呼ばれる動物の形をした自分自身の魂を必ず伴うParallel Worldに住んでいます。ストーリーには"elementary particles（素粒子）"、"photons（光子、光量子）"etc...、文系向きではない単語が多数出てきますが、そこはあまり神経質にならず、ストーリーのテンポの良さと、お転婆どころではないLyraの行動力、Lyraを取り巻く様々な謎や個性的な登場人物達をトコトン楽しみましょう♪ 英語としては、最初の２章は難しい単語も少なく、初っ端からLyraが事件に巻き込まれたりする為、ストレスなく読めます。が、Lyraを取り巻く世界や状況説明が始まる３章からは、辞書との格闘を余儀なくされます（私の場合）。その後、Part.２以降はまた読みやすくなりますが・・・。「上手いなぁ～」と思うのは、まず１＆２章で読者をストーリーに惹き込んでから、少しだけ面倒な状況説明に入るとこ。私達英語初心者は言わずもがなですが、例え英語を母国語とする人達でも、小さな子供達にしてみたら、イマイチ盛り上がりに欠ける状況説明から入るより、イキナリ事件に巻き込まれ、いくつもの謎を突きつけられてからの方が挫折しにくいだろうというのは想像に難くありませんから。 ・・・というわけで、英文抜粋は１章と３章からそれぞれ少しずつさせていただきます。（少しずつじゃ、あまり意味はないと思うけどね~(=^‥^A） （6/4-6/26　所要日数：23日間 ページ数：399ページ One. The Decanter of Tokay Lyra and her daemon moved through the darkening hall, taking care to keep to one side, out of sight of the kitchen. The three great tables that ran the length of the hall were laid already, the silver and the glass catching what little light there was, and the long benches were pulled out ready for the guests. Portraits of former Masters hung high up in the gloom along the walls. Lyra reached the dais and looked back at the open kitchen door, and, seeing no one, stepped up beside the high table. The places here were laid with gold, not silver, and the fourteen seats were not oak benches but mahogany chairs with velvet cushions. Three. Lyra's Jordan Jordan College was the grandest and richest of all the colleges in Oxford. It was probably the largest, too, though no one knew for certain. Some part was always about to fall down, and for five generations the same family, the Parslows, had been employed full time by the College as masons and scaffolders. 最後に、お気に入りの台詞♪ ・"It is the Alethiometer. It tells the truth. As for how to read it, you'll have to learn by yourself." ・"I wish..." she said, and stopped. There was nothing that could be gained by wishing for it. A final deep shaky breath, and she was ready to go on. お薦め度：★★★★★

The Remains of the Day (UK) Kazuo Ishiguro氏のブッカー賞受賞作品で、私にとっては「Never Let Me Go」に続いて２冊目のIshiguro作品です。諸々の雑用が重なり、読むのにやたらと時間がかかってしまいましたが、読み終わった時は「何だか虚しいのだけれど、かつ清々しい」という妙な読後感が病みつきになりそう。(^m^*) 作品全体に流れる「静かな深い愛情」というのが、Ishiguro氏の持ち味なのかな・・・？　今回は古き良きイギリスの高名な紳士に長年仕えてきた執事さんの旅行記＆回顧録。いえ、「過去への旅行記」というべきかな？　今は亡き主人への確かな忠誠心と自分の仕事への誇り、自分でさえ気付くことのなかった愛情の、そしてその破局の突然の自覚。その一生を振り返り、悔やまずにおれないのは、人生の終盤につきものの事ではあるけど、それを「一日の終わり」になぞらえ、来るべき明日に、未来に思いを馳せている点が、常に高みを目指してきた執事さんらしい・・♪ 英語は某HPに「Never Let Me Go」より簡単っぽいことを書いていましたが、間違いなく「Never Let Me Go」より難しいでしょう。 特に古き良きイギリス紳士たちが集まるシーンでは、辞書が手放せない状態でした。逆に言うと、それ以外のシーンでは、比較的楽に読めるんじゃないかと思います。 手に汗握るシーンなどは皆無ですし、「Never Let Me Go」のような衝撃的な展開もありませんが、静かな感動が欲しい人、必読です♪ ↑のリンク、品切れかもしれませんが、私が買ったのはこのUK版なので無理矢理リンク。 初心者向けに書き直されたペンギンズ・リーダー版(?)の「The Remains of the Day」もあるので、買う際は要注意☆ （4/31-6/2　所要日数：34日間~(=^‥^A） ページ数：258ページ It seems increasingly likely that I really will undertake the expedition that has been preoccupying my imagination now for some days. An expedition, I should say, which I will undertake alone, in the comfort of Mr Farraday's Ford; an expedition which, as I foresee it, will take me through much of the finest countryside of England to the West Country, and may keep me away from Darlington Hall for as much as five or six days. The idea of such a journey came about, I should point out, from a most kind suggestion put to me by Mr Farraday himself one afternoon almost a fortnight ago, when I had been dusting the portraits in the library. In fact, as I recall, I was up on the step-ladder dusting the portrait of Viscount Wetherby when my employer had entered carrying a few volumes which he presumably wished returned to the shelves. On seeing my person, he took the opportunity to inform me that he had just that moment finalized plans to return to the United States for a period of five weeks between August and September. Having made this announcement, my employer put his volumes down on a table, seated himself on the chaise-longue, and stretched out his legs. It was then, gazing up at me, that he said. お薦め度：★★★★☆

Harry Potter And the Order of the Phoenix (UK) シリーズ最長の第５巻！３→６→７→１→２→４→５巻と、奇妙奇天烈な順序になってはしまいましたが、私にとって英語版ハリー・ポッタ・シリーズへの最後の挑戦となった巻です。散々な仕打ちに＋反抗期で、１巻の可愛いハリーとは別人かと思うほど短気なHarryが、新しく加わった仲間達とともに、Ministry of Magic相手に、そしてもちろんDeath Eaters や Voldemort 相手に大暴れします。が、痛快とは決して言えないエンディングが待っております。この『やるせなさ』は最終巻を読み終えるまでは消えないどころか、益々度を増していくので、最終巻が出てから一気に読破しようと思っている人が、一番ストレスを感じない正しい読み方かも。 英語のレベル的には４巻よりも少しアップしたのかなとは思いますが、１巻から読んできた人にとってはお馴染みの単語がおおいので、特に苦にならずに読める程度です。 （3/8-4/8　所要日数：32日間） 総語数：258,220語 The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and drowsy silence lay over the large, square house of Privet Drive.Cars that were usually gleaming stood dusty in their drives and lawns that were once emerald green lay parched and yellowing ― for the use of hosepipes had been banned due to drought. Deprived of their usual car-washing and lawn-mowing pursuits, the inhabitants of Privet Drive had retreated into the shade of their cool houses, windows thrown wide in the hope of tempting in a nonexistent breeze. The only person left outdoors was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four. He was a skinny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who had the pinched, slightly unhealthy look of someone who has grown a lot in a short space of time. His jeans were torn and dirty, his T-shirt baggy and faded, and the soles of his trainers were peeling away from the uppers. Harry Potter's appearance did not endear him to the neighbours, who were the sort of people who thought scruffiness ought to be punishable by law, but as he had hidden himself behind a large hydrangea bush this evening he was quite invisible to passers-by. お薦め度：★★★★☆

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (US) １～３巻までは読み切りの本同様、もしくはそれ以上に、読み終えた時に『あぁ、良かった。面白かった』と本を置くことができますが、４巻以降は幾つかの試練を乗り越え、謎を突き止めた喜びよりも、今後の展開への不安を募らせながら本を閉じる人が多くなるのではないでしょうか。１～３巻までも７巻のラストにたどり着くためには欠かせない要素となってはおりますが、４巻以降は７巻のラストにたどり着くための長い道のりの一行程としての側面が強くなってきている感じです。では４巻だけを振り返って面白くなかったのかと聞かれると、とっても面白かったです♪『無駄に長い巻』という印象のあった４巻ですが、意外なオチの数々は流石です。英語的にはイディオムなどが増えてきて、少し難易度がアップしている感があります。 （2/7-3/7　所要日数：約28日間） 総語数：約191,694語 The villagers of Little Hangleton still called it "the Riddle House," even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there. It stood on a hill overlooking the village, some of its windows boarded, tiles missing from its roof, and ivy spreading unchecked over its face. Once a fine-looking manor, and easily the largest and grandest building for miles around, the Riddle House was now damp, derelict, and unoccupied. The Little Hangletons all agreed that the old house was "creepy." Half a century ago, something strange and horrible had happened there, something that the older inhabitants of the village still liked to discuss when topics for gossip were scarce. The story had been picked over so many times, and had been embroidered in so many places, that nobody was quite sure what the truth was anymore. お薦め度：★★★★☆　（★3.5ぐらいかな～？）

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Roald Dahlによる原作も有名ですが、映画化された事でも有名な『チャーリーとチョコレート工場』。奇想天外なキャラクターや設定・ストーリーにワクワクしながら、ブラックすぎるユーモアに込められた教訓を読みとるというのが、この本の本来の読み方かもしれませんが、個人的にはWonka氏の孤独を何故か想像してしまう、そして作者の子供達への深い愛情が印象的な本でした。子供達を生かすも殺すも大人次第という意味では、大人達こそ読むべきなのかも。Roald Dahlらしいブラックで予想外なストーリーを楽しみたいなら、ショートストーリー集の方がお薦めです。★の数はハリ・ポタなど他の本との対比において少な目設定。 （2/3－2/5　所要日数：約３日間） ページ数：155ページ They were looking down upon a lovely valley. There were green meadows on either side of the valley, and along the bottom of it there flowed a great brown river. What is more, there was a tremendous water curled and rolled in a solid sheet, and then went crashing down into a boiling churning whirlpool of froth and spray. Below the waterfall (and this was the most astonishing sight of all), a whole mass of enormous glass pipes were dangling down into the river from somewhere high up in the ceiling! They really were enormous, those pipes. There must have been a dozen of them at least, and they were sucking up the brownish muddy water from the river and carrying it away to goodness knows where. お薦め度：★★☆☆☆

Harry Potter and the Chamber of the Secrets (US) もはや内容を説明するまでもないハリーポッター・シリーズ第二巻。英語のレベル的には１巻とさして変わらず、１巻を既に読み終えていて、ハリ・ポタ独自の単語やハグリッドの訛りに慣れていれば、読むのは苦ではないかと思います。ハリ・ポタには意外と、日常でも使いやすい文章表現・会話表現が満載じゃないかと思うので、英語学習の一環として読んでみたい人にもいいのではないかと。（使える表現を盗んでやろうと思いつつ、なかなか身に付かない私が言っても説得力はゼロですが）もちろん、細かいことは気にせず、怪物やゴースト達が闊歩し、火の鳥が舞い飛ぶ世界に思いっきり没頭してみたい人にももってこいの作品です。数時間の映画では表しきれない不思議な世界をトコトン楽しみましょう。 （1/16－1/26　所要日数：約11日間） 総語数：約84,993語 Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive. Mr. Vernon Dursley had been woken in the early hours of the morning by a loud, hooting noise from his nephew Harry's room. "Third time this week!" he roared across the table. "If you can't control that owl, it'll have to go!" Harry tried, yet again, to explain. "She's bored," he said. "She's used to flying around outside. If I could just let her out at night -" "Do I look stupid?" snarled Uncle Vernon, a bit of fried egg dangling from his bushy mustache. "I know what'll happen if that owl's let out." He exchanged dark looks with his wife, Petunia. Harry tried to argue back but his words were drowned by a long, loud belch from the Dursleys' son, Dudley. お薦め度：★★★★★

Bridge to Terabithia ディズニーが映画化したので日本でも有名な『テラビシアにかける橋』の原作です。 ５年生で一番早いランナーになる為に練習に励んでいた絵を描くのが大好きなJessが、転校生のLeslieと出会い、二人だけの王国を築きながら友情を育んでいき・・・。友情・家庭・勇気そして死など、多くのテーマから何をどう感じるかは読者次第かも。－誰も知らない二人だけの秘密の王国 ― 『そんなこと、私も昔はしてたっけ』と感慨に耽ってみるも良し、Jessの素直で情熱的かつストレートな気持ちに微笑むも良し、思いっきり泣いてみるも良し。英文は短めで初心者向けですが、会話文はかなりカジュアル。★の数はハリ・ポタなど他の本との対比において少な目。 個人的には★３つ。 （1/3－1/11　所要日数：約９日間） ページ数：約191ページ "Do you know what we need?" Leslie called to him. Intoxicated as he was with the heavens, he couldn't imagine needing anything on earth. "We need a place," she said, "just for us. It would be so secret that we would never tell anyone in the whole world about it." Jess came swinging back and dragged his feet to stop. She lowered her voice almost to a whisper. "It might be a whole secret country," she continued, "and you and I would be the rulers of it."Her words stirred inside of him. He'd like to be a ruler of something. Even something that wasn't real. "OK," he said. "Where could we have it?" "Over there in the woods where nobody would come and mess it up." There were parts of the woods that Jess did not like. Dark places where it was almost like being underwater, but he didn't say so. "I know" - she was getting excited - "it could be a magic country like Narnia, and the only way you can get in is by swinging across on this enchanted rope." お薦め度：★★☆☆☆

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (US) 言わずもがなのハリーポッター・シリーズ第１巻。 ハリ・ポタ７巻を読み終えた今では、かなり簡単な英文に思えますが、初めてハリ・ポタを読む方には、ファンタジー特有の日常生活ではまずお目にかかることのない単語の数々が少し鬱陶しいかもしれません。１巻は特に最初から最後まで新鮮な驚きと感動に溢れ、十二分に満足のいくラストも待ち受けているので、苦労した以上に楽しめる本だと思います。唯一の不満は、"Philosopher's Stone（賢者の石）” が US版では "Sorcerer's Stone（魔法使いの石）" になっていることぐらいかな。 （12/20－1/1　所要日数：約13日間 総語数：約77,618語 Mr. and Mrs. Dursely, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. The Dursley had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere. お薦め度：★★★★★

読書記録・洋書

2007年とそれまでに読んだ洋書の感想と、全く主観的なお薦め度。

Never Let Me Go ５歳でイギリスに渡り、イギリス国籍を取得した後、『The Remains of the Day』でブッカー賞を受賞したKazuo Ishiguro氏の最新作。 一見、普通の女性の回顧録のようですが、話が進むにつれて彼女のおかれている状況の異常さが明らかになっていきます。 徒に感情に走ることなく、淡々と理性的に紡がれていく彼女の世界に引き込まれ、ラストは泣くというよりも、いろいろな感情にただ圧倒されるといった方がいいかもしれません。 難しい単語もあまり使われておらず、わかりやすい綺麗で流れるような英語なので、ハリーポッターよりも読みやすいと思います。 洋書・和書合わせて、2007年で一番印象的だった１冊です。 ページ数：約288ページ So you're waiting, even if you don't quite know it, waiting for the moment when you realise that you really are different to them; that there are people out there, like Madame, who don't hate you or wish you any harm, but who nevertheless shudder at the very thought of you - of how you were brought into this world and why - and who dread the idea of your hand brushing against theirs. The first time you glimpse yourself through the eyes of a person like that, it's a cold moment. It's like walking past a mirror you've walked past every day of your life, and suddenly it shows you something else, something troubling and strange. お薦め度：★★★★★

Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows (US) Harry Potterシリーズの７作目＆最終巻！ 途中、怒りっぽくて自分一人で全てを解決してきたかのような態度をとるハリーにイライラしたり、巻を追うごとに目新しいファンタジーの要素が少なくなり、投げ出したくなった人！（私のことです） きっと最後まで読んでよかったと思えるはず。 ご都合主義？ いいえ、ファンタジーです。　とびっきりの♪=＾-＾= 総語数：約180,000語 The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands directed at each other's chests; then, recognizing each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and started walking briskly in the same direction. "News?" asked the taller of the two. "The best," replied Severus Snape. The lane was bordered on the left by wild, low-growing brambles, on the right by a high, neatly manicured hedge. Harry Potter And the Half-Blood Prince (UK) Harry Potterシリーズの６作目。 ３巻をオーディオブックと一緒に何度も読み込み、かなり基本的な単語に自信をつけてから臨んだ６巻。 『それが何か？』と言わんばかりに、相変わらず未知の単語との格闘を余儀なくされた巻。 ハリー・ポッター・シリーズは、イギリスの子供達が読書を楽しみながら読解力も伸ばせるようにと、意図して、巻を追うごとに難しい単語やイディオムが増え、理由や答えを与えるのではなく、自分たちで考えさせるような描写になっているそうです。 若干、ありがた迷惑な気がしないでもありませんが、せっかくなので楽しんで苦しみましょう。（？） 事件が立て続けに起こる割に、中だるみの気がしないでもない６巻。 ただ後々重要になってくることがワンサと出てくるので、気が抜けません。 総語数：約169,907語 It was nearing midnight and the Prime Minister was sitting alone in his office, reading a long memo that was slipping through his brain without leaving the slightest trace of meaning behind. Harry Potter And the Prisoner of Azkaban : Audio Book (US) ３巻を読み終えた後、HPで試聴して衝動買いしてしまったオーディオブック。 買って大正解でした。 UK版のオーディオブックの方が若干ゆっくりめで、US版は演技性が高めだという評判です。 リスニングの強化だけでなく、英語だけではわかりにくいニュアンスも、オーディオブックなら味わうことができます。 試聴してみたい方、１巻・２巻・３巻・４巻・５巻・６巻・７巻それぞれ一部試聴可能です。 UK版はiTuneのサイトから試聴可能です。 英語を耳にする機会はいくらあっても足りないと思うので、お薦め度は若干高めにしておきますが、何せお高いので、トコトン楽しめるものを選んで買いましょう。 お薦め度：★★★☆☆

Harry Potter And the Prisoner of Azkaban (UK) Harry Potterシリーズの３作目。 『ビッグ・ファット・キャットの世界一簡単な英語の本』を読んだ後、たまたま立ち寄ったデパートで洋書フェアのようなものを開催していたので衝動買いし、2007年まで本棚で寝かせてしまった１冊です。 （１巻ではなく３巻を選んだのは、（当時）一番面白かった３巻なら楽しんで読めるだろうという甘い考えがあったからです） 初めての本格的な洋書にハリ・ポタの、よりによって３巻を選んだのは大きな間違いでしたが、『ハリー・ポッター vol.3 が英語で楽しく読める本』のおかげでなんとか読破。 ハリ・ポタには私達には馴染みのない英語がワンサと出てくるうえに、訛りで喋る人達などが出てくるので、最初はこの手のガイド本に頼るのも手です。 特にスタン達の訛り。 （私には）ガイド本が必需品です。 総語数：約107,583語 Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. Big Fat Cat and the Snow of the Century Big Fat Cat シリーズ７作目にして最終巻。 100年に１度かという程の大雪の晩に姿を消したCat。 Catは？ エドの店は？ ジェレミーは？ ジョージ達はどうなるの？ そして小さな奇跡が起きるわけです。 だってクリスマスですから。 =＾-＾= 優しい気持ちにしてくれて、思いっきり泣かせてくれた、私にとってはとても大事な１冊です。 コラムの代わりに、この巻では５つの短編（？）がついています。 Story：約81ページ、短編集：約21ページ（解説は別冊） Ed spotted the sign for the sadwich shop he had stopped at. He could almost see a phantom of himself and the cat on the roadside, still looking for a new job. Everything that had happened since then - both the good and the bad - the cat had always been there with him. お薦め度：★★★★★

Big Fat Cat and the Fortune Cookie Big Fat Cat シリーズ６作目。 絶体絶命のピンチに追い込まれたエド。 ある意味、Catが大活躍（？）する巻です。 『活躍』といっていいのかは甚だ疑問ですが・・・。(^m^*) 日本語では使い古された言い回しも英語だと新鮮に感じるからなのか、私の涙腺が弛んだだけなのか、この本に人を素直にさせる何かがあるからなのかわかりませんが、泣いてしまいました。 Story：約61ページ、コラム：約41ページ（解説は別冊） After standing absolutely still for a moment, Jeremy waved his hand at the pie. A giant blaze of fire burst out from under his cape. It covered the surface of the pie in flames for a few seconds, then disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. お薦め度：★★★★★

Mr. Jones Big Fat Cat シリーズ５作目。 EdとJeremy、双方共に負けられない理由を抱えて臨むパイ・コンテスト。 その背後でうごめく怪しい人影と２匹の・・・ ストーリーはどんどん緊迫の度を増していきますが、Catと挿絵が和ませてくれます。 英語だということも忘れて没頭できます。 Story：約52ページ、コラム：約43ページ（解説は別冊） But when people nearby began to look at him suspiciously, he started to run after Ed - but fell because of his shaking legs. He got up and continued to run. "Ed! Hey! Wait up! Ed!" Unnoticed by either of them, a dark shadow crouched by the gate silently, watching everything. お薦め度：★★★★☆

Big Fat Cat and the Magic Pie Shop Big Fat Cat シリーズ４作目。 登場人物が増えるにつれて会話文も多くなり、１ページあたりの文章量も増え、かなり本格的になってきました。 新しい展開と相次ぐ事件、少しずつ複雑に、そして深みを増していく人間関係etc...。 どんどんおもしろくなっていきます。 Story：約54ページ、コラム：約40ページ（解説は別冊） Ed noticed the full moon in the sky for the first time. And in spite of all the chaos, it was still beautiful. A comfortable breeze circled around them. Geroge began to sing along with Willy. It was a song Ed had heard millions of times, but he had never realized how beautiful it was until now. お薦め度：★★★★☆

Big Fat Cat and the Ghost Avenue Big Fat Cat シリーズ３作目。 一見、落ちるところまで落ちたエド。 世間から忘れられ、見捨てられたような場所でエドが出会ったのは・・・？ 事件や風景の描写よりも、内面的な描写が増えて、読み応えが一気に増す巻です。 だからといって難しく構える必要はありません。 風景描写には日本人には理解しづらい部分もあるかもしれませんが、人間の感情に国籍は（基本的には）関係ありませんから。=＾-＾= Story：約47ページ、コラム：約46ページ（解説は別冊） His blurry mind figured out that he was somewhere on the northwest side of town, near the old mines. The area had been busy during the twenties and thirties because of the mining business. The barber from the shop next to Pie Heaven had told him that there used to be a beautiful old cinema here. お薦め度：★★★★☆

Big Fat Cat Goes To Town Big Fat Cat シリーズ２作目。 エドの受難の日々はまだまだ続きます。 登場人物も少しずつ増えてきて、否が応にもストーリーは盛り上がっていきます。 Story：約45ページ、解説とコラム：約58ページ The New EverVille Mall loomed before him. The mall contained three department stores, nine restaurants, more than forty retail shops, and a movie theater. It really was big compared to the Outside Mall, but it seemed even bigger to Ed. お薦め度：★★★☆☆

Big Fat Cat and the Mustard Pie Big Fat Cat シリーズ１作目ですが、Ed とcatの出会いは『ビッグ・ファット・キャットの世界一簡単な英語の本』に書かれています。 できればそちらから読んでみてくださいね。 このシリーズはとっても簡単なレベルから徐々にレベルアップできるように考えて作られているし、丁寧な説明付きなので、初めて英語の小説にチャレンジする方にはイチオシです。 少し難しめ（？）の単語の上には日本語で意味が書かれているので辞書をひく必要もありません。 Story：約43ページ、解説とコラム：約51ページ This is the small town of Everville. It is a middle-class town located on a mountainside. Roughly, eight thousand people live here, work here, study here and sleep here... お薦め度：★★☆☆☆

The Missing Piece 絵本です。　口を開いたような形をした "it" が、自分に欠けているpieceを探しに旅に出て・・・ このお話を読むと、ミュージカルで映画にもなった"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" を思い出します。 完璧じゃないから、足りないからこそ、求め、努力し、感じるものがあって、それが自分なんだと認めつつ、それでも歩き続ける力こそが必要なのかな。 でも、たまに『自分は神のように完璧だ』と勘違いして周りが見えなくなってる人達いますよね。　結構。ヾ(;´▽｀A`` いいお話ですが、お高いので減点。 It was missing a piece. 年の瀬を間近に控えて、勉強のというより、読書の記録を整理中。
英語の勉強のために買ったというより、ほとんど活字中毒者の趣味ですね。

Forest 文法書の定番 中学から高校までの文法をわかりやすく説明しています。 文法を丸覚えさせるのではなく、『どうしてそうなるのか』というところまで図解入りで説明してくれています。 Writingにも Readingにも大いに役立ちます。=＾-＾= 例文はもう少し欲しいかな？ 練習問題は申し訳程度。 わかりやすさよりも、詳細な説明を求める人には、ロイヤル英文法がお薦め。 文法を一通り把握した後、Reading等を通して細かい表現を覚えたい人にはForest、一冊でより高い結果を求めたい方にはロイヤルをお薦めします。 お薦め度：★★★★★

書く英語・基礎編 名前の書き方から、数の数え方まで、Writingの基本から丁寧に書かれている本。 初版は1962年にも関わらず、未だベストセラーなのが良書の証。(?) 頻出の英文法の説明と、それを補完するための基本的な英作問題がてんこ盛りです。 多少、眠たくなるキライはなきにしもあらずですが、やっただけの成果は期待できます。 お薦め度：★★★★☆

日本人に共通する英語のミス151 これを読みながら、思わず頭を抱え込んでしまいました。~(=^‥^A 『そういうことは早く言って欲しかった』 そういうことがたくさん載ってます。 Writingだけじゃなく、Speakingにおいても使えることばかりです。 でも私がこの本で一番気に入っているのは、説明が日本語と英語の両方で書かれていること。 これを全部覚えたら、恥ずかしい思いをすることもかなり減るだろうと思いつつ、たまに読み返しては、頭を抱え込むことを繰り返してます。 お薦め度：★★★☆☆

ビッグ・ファット・キャットの世界一簡単な英語の本 これも有名！！ ヾ(;´▽｀A`` 文法の解説には、私は特にこれといって感じるものはありませんでしたが、いわゆる 『多読』 を世に広めるきっかけの一つになった本ですね。 難しい文法なんか知らなくても、存分に英語を楽しめるんだと説いて、それなりの成果を出した本ではないかと思います。（まぁ、それも人によるのかもしれませんが） この本自体は、当時、中学に入学したばかりの甥っ子にあげてしまったので手元にありませんが、私の大好きな『Big Fat Catシリーズ』は、厳密にはこの本から始まります。 英語が嫌いな人にこそ読んでみて欲しい本です。 お薦め度：★★★★★

英語で日記を書いてみる－英語力が確実にUPする これを最初に買ったのは数年前。 その時はろくに読みもせず、いきなり英語日記にチャレンジして、見事に１週間程で挫折しました。~(=^‥^A このブログを始める時にじっくり読み返し、たくさんある例文を参考に書いてみただけで、『英語で日記を書く』習慣を身につけるための最初のハードルはクリアできたような気も・・・。 基礎文法を網羅しているわけではなく、あくまで最初の一歩を踏み出すための、あるいは、最初の一歩を踏み出して、自分に何が足りないかを確認するための本かな？ お薦め度：★★★☆☆

ネイティブスピーカーの英文法 この作者の本は、一読の価値あり。 『文法はややこしい、せっかく覚えても山ほど例外はあるし、やってられない！』という方には是非読んでもらいたいです。 結局、言葉というのは話し手・書き手の感覚に応じて、自由に紡がれていくものなんだなと思えます。 もちろん、そのためには基本が必要だし、いろんな表現にふれる必要性も出てくるんですけどね。 お薦め度：★★★★★

英文法をこわす－感覚による再構築 こちらはちょっと古め。文も若干堅めです。 ただ、私が初めて読んだこの作者の著書で、英文法の中でいろいろな意味を持ち、私達を悩ませがちな『that』のイメージをとても分かりやすく説明されていて、目から鱗の一冊でした。 ただ、ある程度の『壊すべき文法知識』がないと無意味かもしれません。(^^; どうせ買うなら、この方の著書には新しくて文も分かりやすい本がいくつも出ているので、そちらを買った方がいいかもしれません。 お薦め度：★★★★☆

英語の発音がよくなる本 買ったのは何年前でしょう？ 正しく発音できなければ、Listeningも無理だと思って衝動買いした本。 発音する際の舌の位置がイラストで確認でき、その音が日本語ではどの音に似ているかなども書かれていて、発音の基本はとりあえずこれでOKかと。 発音を確認し、練習するためのCDもついていますが、このCDはあなたを極上のSleeping Timeに誘ってくれること間違いなし。(^^; これで、発音の基礎を練習し、洋楽を聴きながら一緒に歌って発音を練習しましたが、母音の発音はいまだに苦手です。 お薦め度：★★☆☆☆

こんな時 What Do Ｙｏｕ Say? これも数年前に近所の本屋で衝動買いしました。 漫画仕立てになっていて読みやすく、CDもついているので、衝動買いにしては満足できた本です。 "Can you do me a favor?" "Give it a shot." etc...　等のよく使われる表現が、どういう場面で使われ、どの程度にカジュアルな表現なのか、この表現の持つ他の意味、同じ意味を他の表現でどう言うか等、結構しっかりした説明付きで紹介されています。 特に会話本には、これさえ買えばOKという本はまずないかと思うので、買う際は気休めと割り切って。 お薦め度：★☆☆☆☆

ネイティブと話がはずむオシャレに話す英会話―61 small talk exercises for ladies これも会話本ですね。 CD付きで、１ページにあるシーンを想定した会話が英語で書かれ、隣のページにその和訳が載っています。 その次のページには単語の説明、その隣には大事な表現の言い回し例などが載っています。 "work with～" "What if～" "When it comes to ～" etc... 等、上の本では買い物や挨拶など、短めの決まり文句が多く紹介されていますが、この本ではもう少し突っ込んだ感じの、自分の意見を言う際に使える言い回しも載っています。 とはいえ、基本ができていないと、その後をつなげることは無理だと思いますが・・・。~(=^‥^A よく使われるイディオムや決まり文句もまぁソコソコ載ってます。 お薦め度：★☆☆☆☆

基礎英文問題精講 これも病院での待ち時間用に近所で衝動買いした本。 ところがどっこい、良書でした。 大学受験対策を一番の目的とした本なので、眠気を誘うのも事実ですが、例文の一つ一つは短く、綺麗な文章ばかりで、真似したくなるものばかり。 例文で使われている文法の説明も丁寧です。 どうせ真似するなら、薄っぺらいスラングより、綺麗な文章・言葉を真似たいものです。 とはいえ、特に無理して買う必要があるかと問われると、そんなことはないと答えてしまう１冊。 自分の基礎読解力を試してみたい方にはいいかも。 お薦め度：★★☆☆☆
